Transport & Installation of Windflow turbines

Thanks to the two-bladed load-avoiding design the Windflow 500 is both lighter and more compact than conventional three-bladed turbines. The nacelle of the 33-500 weighs less than 10 tonnes and the blade tips just overhang the end of a standard articulated trailer by only 3 metres.

Light and compact makes it easier to deliver, as standard trucks and roads can be used.  Cranes are often the heaviest and widest load, which determines the road requirements, and here a smaller crane can typically be used compared to three-bladed turbines. Widening, straightening and strengthening of public access roads are unlikely to be required and, typically, existing farm tracks do not need to be modified. This is particularly important for single installations where additional costs could tip the project from viable to non-viable.

Light and two-bladed means that tower sections are relatively light and all tower lifts have been designed for single crane lifting.  Nacelle and rotor are fully assembled at ground level so the the complete assembly can be lifted onto the tower in one straight-forward lift, something not possible for conventional three-bladed turbines.  This could be crucial for installing in small weather windows during bad weather to meet FIT deadlines.

Should major maintenance be required, e.g. to replace a generator or pitch bearings, this work can be performed most easily with the nacelle lowered to the safety of ground level, which can be achieved with only a day of crane hire.
